GO GLOBAL NC INTERNSHIP

During the summer of 2018, I worked with Go Global NC (formerly the Center for International Understanding) as the Marketing and Communications Intern and learned about how the organization connects North Carolina and the world.

Global Teacher Fellowship Toolkit

My main focus during my experience was to develop a fundraising toolkit for the Global Teacher Fellowship. This toolkit is to be used by the main fundraising team, as well as future fundraising teams representing counties all over North Carolina. The Fellowship is a proposed expansion to Go Global NC's Global Teachers Program.

My first task at Go Global NC was to read through the GT Fellowship Case Statement and offer suggestions. When I finished, my supervisor and I agreed that a website would be the best medium to share the case statement's information. Using graphics and animation, I created a site that was informative and visually appealing. The site has launched under the URL www.gtfellowship.info.

While I was designing the GT Fellowship website, I realized that it couldn't just be walls of text. I needed to appeal to the reader's visual senses. Using Canva, I designed a series of infographics, charts and images that matched each section of the website. These pieces can be used can be used past the website as well: as social media pieces or printed handouts. I have featured three separate inforgraphics, and more can be seen at the website link to the left.

After I finished the GT Fellowship website, my supervisor asked me to create a modern version of an old flyer. I rearranged information on the old flyer to create a more persuasive message. I also created a brochure version to be used alternatively. People are more likely to pick up brochures than fliers in a hurry, which could aid the organization during a busy event.

I took it upon myself to adapt older publications from the Go Global NC website. These publications recapped Global Teacher experiences, but there was not an easy way to disseminate the information. I adapted each publication to fit a "booklet" format, easy to hand out at events and visually pleasing to look at. I have featured the South Africa 2016 booklet as an example.

My supervisor asked me to create a tool to be used while presenting the GT Fellowship to large groups. Following the format of the website, I created a PowerPoint presentation. I made sure to use the same images in each section as the website, so that readers would recall the inspiring words of the presenter while they were exploring online.

About two-thirds of the way through my internship, I asked my supervisor if I could write a news release for the GT Fellowship campaign. She gave me the assignment to draft a news release template to be used when a county has been selected to receive a matching grant and begins its fundraising campaign.

Towards the end of my internship, I wanted to create a short-form fundraising tool. one that visually reminded readers of the Fellowship, but was not overbearing. To meet this goal, I created a series of "storytelling postcards" that detailed a Global Teacher's experience abroad and the impact they brought back. The example above is from the 2016 South Africa delegation.

In between my tasks, I played around with visual "mini-tactics" that would aid the fundraising campaign. The first is a business card, using the iconic GT Fellowship image. Ideally, this design would be used by the fundraising team  The second "mini-tactic" is a potential logo for the campaign.

Other Projects

During my time at Go Global NC, I designed a couple social media tactics for the organization and helped assemble a VNR for a local broadcast. This section also includes the reflection I wrote as part of the internship course at UNC Charlotte.

I assembled an editorial calendar for the month of August, with content surrounding the launch of the GT Fellowship. The content is evergreen, so it can be posted

whenever the organization unveils the Fellowship. I have featured a few proposed posts across different social media accounts.

Later on in my internship, I proposed a Twitter Q&A strategy that would increase the organization's visibility and could be replicated several times for different programs. This proposal includes an explanation of the planning process, timeline, risks and benefits of using a tool like this.

During my internship, Meredith Henderson, the Senior Director of Programs, was asked to appear on Education Matters. My supervisor saw this as an opportunity to highlight Go Global NC programs and asked me to assemble a VNR to send to the Education Matters team ahead of the interview. I was also asked to help train Ms. Henderson for her onscreen interview prior to filming.
